How the pieces fit together
A network contains channels and posts. A target connects a channel to a template and a path prefix. Publishing a post through that target creates a publication, displayed as a page on the channel’s website.
For example: an Article post can be published to the support channel through its Article target, displayed with the Article template, at an address beginning with /articles. A Person or Organization profile can supply the Author credit.

Learn more: Create a channel.
Website
The visitor-facing site served by a channel configured for website use, including its home page, navigation, and published content.

Related: Domain, Channel.
Learn more: Create a channel.
DNS
Domain Name System settings that direct an internet address to the service hosting a site. Use the records provided for your channel when connecting a custom domain.
Related: Domain, Hostname.

Post
A saved content item with a content type and field values. A post can be published through more than one destination; its content and its publications are related but separate.
Related: Content type, Publication, Field.
Content type
The kind of content a post represents, such as Article, Person, Organization, Event, Product, or Service. Available types and publishing choices depend on the destination.
Related: Post, Template, Target.

Related: Quick post, Story, Author.
Learn more: Create an Article with Quick post.

The streamlined creation view that shows the essential fields for your selected template. Turning off Quick post reveals optional fields; it does not turn an Article into a different content type.
Related: Article, Template, Field.
Learn more: Create an Article with Quick post.
Person (People)
A profile post about an individual. Person is the content type; People may be the name of the section listing those profiles. A profile can be used for an author credit or a reference. Creating it does not create a login.
Related: Organization, Author, User account.
Learn more: Create a Person post.
Organization
A profile post about a business, group, or institution. It can contain contact details, expertise, and an About section, and can be used for author credits and references.

Related: Permissions, Person, Author.
Publishing and display

Related: Channel, Template, Path prefix.

Template
The design and field arrangement used to display content. A post template controls how an individual post appears; the channel template provides the surrounding site design.
Related: Target, Field, Channel template.
Channel template
The surrounding design for a channel’s website, including elements such as navigation and footer. It works alongside the templates used for individual posts.
Related: Template, Channel.
Learn more: Create a channel.

A post’s placement on a channel through a target. It has its own path and publication settings, including status and indexing. One post can have several publications.
Related: Post, Target, Page, Status.
Page
The visitor-facing presentation of content at a web address. In publishing settings, a page record represents a publication. Page can also be a content type used for a home page or other site page.

The portion of a page’s address after the hostname. In this support site, /articles/how-to-create-a-channel is a path.

Path prefix
The leading path configured on a target, such as /articles. It helps organize the addresses of posts published through that target.
Related: Target, Path.

A grouped area of a site, such as Articles or People. A channel’s setup can provide the targets and listing pages for selected sections. Separately, a Sections Page uses layout sections to organize its page content.
Related: Target, Navigation, Sections Page.
Sections Page
A page template for arranging text, links, cards, pictures, and other supported parts into layout sections and columns. The support home page uses this approach.
Related: Section, Template, Page.

The menus and links that help visitors move through the website. A saved post or newly created section may still need an appropriate navigation link.
Related: Channel template, Section, Page.

Related: Field, Article.

Related: Status, Publication.
Learn more: Create an Article with Quick post.
Listed
A published state that allows a page to participate in site listings according to their selection rules. The channel must also be live for visitors to see its site.

Hidden
A publication state for content that should not appear in normal listings. Do not use Hidden as a substitute for access restrictions on sensitive material.
Related: Listed, Permissions, Status.
Published / Live
Labels used to indicate that content or a channel is available for visitors. Channel visibility and an individual page’s publication status are separate settings; a page’s status alone does not make an unpublished channel serve a site.
Related: Channel, Publication, Status.
Learn more: Create a channel.
Indexed
A page setting controlling inclusion in the site’s search index. It is separate from publication status and is not an access restriction or a guarantee about external search engines.
Related: Publication, Permissions, Hidden.
Published date
The date attached to a publication. The current publication controls accept today or an earlier date; do not treat this field as a future scheduling control.
Related: Publication, Status.
Permissions
The access granted to a user account for viewing or managing dashboard resources and actions. The available choices can vary by user, network, and destination.
Related: User account, Network, Review.
Review
An approval step that may apply when submitting content to a destination with moderation requirements. Submission does not always mean immediate publication.

Commonly confused terms
Post, publication, and page
The post holds the content. A publication places it on a channel with a target, path, and status. A page is the visitor-facing result. Editing shared post fields can affect every publication of that post.
Channel and Organization
A channel is a publishing destination and can provide a website. An Organization is a profile post about a business or group. Creating one does not automatically create the other.
Author and user account
The Author field credits a Person or Organization profile. A user account signs in and receives permissions. A profile does not invite someone, create a login, or grant access.
Channel template and post template
The channel template supplies the surrounding website design. A post template arranges the fields for an individual piece of content. The target connects that post template to a channel and path prefix.
Quick post and Article
Quick post is a streamlined way to enter content. Article is a content type. You can create an Article using Quick post, then reveal optional fields when you need them.
Draft, Hidden, Indexed, and permissions
Draft controls whether a publication is ready to go live. Hidden affects normal listing visibility. Indexed controls inclusion in site search. Permissions govern dashboard access and actions. Hiding a page or removing it from search does not establish private access.
